Conroe’s queen of the airwaves has a shiny new title to add to her crowning achievements.
Mary McCoy released her first record,"Deep Elem Blues," in 1960 and signed with the Jin label.
Local radio legend Mary McCoy went on the radio with KMCO AM station when she was a teenager. She was given the chance to go over to the FM station KNRO when it was bought by the Owen family, but she said she just couldn't leave her KMCO family. Rigby Owen Jr. said he had to buy KMCO to get McCoy to come onboard. She signed a contract in 1967 with Gabe Tucker and recorded many singles and duets with Jimmy Copeland. She also performed at the Huntsville Prison Rodeo with Roy Acuff in 1965.
The number of country artists she’s interviewed and befriended over the years is countless. At KVST, there’s a photo of her and her friend the late Loretta Lynn. She also has a picture with “The King” when they were on the Louisiana Hayride together.
“She broke out in happy tears,” said Stout who lives with her mom. “The best part was seeing the smile on her face when she found out.”When McCoy was pregnant, KMCO owner Reagan Smith asked her to name her daughter after the station, she said.
