LUBBOCK — All offseason, Texas preached on why things would be different from a year ago. The locker room was more connected. The buy-in was unanimous. The bad seeds had been plucked and discarded. So they said. Saturday afternoon at Jones AT&T Stadium will be viewed as a bump in the road. But it sure didn’t feel that way in the aftermath of a collapse that felt so familiar to those Texas suffered last season. “We didn’t play good enough to win today,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “Too inconsistent offensively. We struggled to protect the quarterback and win on first down in the second half. Defensively, our inability to get off the field was a real factor. I’m disappointed on our end.” No. 22 Texas will now tumble into next week’s Big 12 home opener against West Virginia in desperate need of a win with its annual rivalry game against No. 6 Oklahoma awaiting on Oct. 8.Texas couldn’t get off the field Texas Tech ran 100 plays to Texas’ 60. It would’ve looked like a typo to anyone who didn’t watch the game, but the Red Raiders kept extending drives with some gutsy play-calling. The Red Raiders went for it on fourth down eight different times. Even more striking: They converted four attempts in the second half and six overall. “And of those six, a few of those were close and we couldn’t get the quarterback on the ground to get them off the field, which was disappointing,” Sarkisian said. Texas Tech also owned a significant edge in time of possession, controlling the ball for nearly 36 minutes.Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith was a hard man to get a handle. And he excelled on fourth down, going 3 of 4 for 20 yards and rushing three times for 7 yards to help along with those six fourth-and-short conversions. Overall, Smith completed 38 of 56 passes for 331 yards with two touchdowns while recording 42 yards and another score on the ground. Though he was sacked twice, Smith kept slithering away from pass rushers to extend plays and find open receivers. He only misfired on two of his final 14 passes while leading Texas Tech back from a 31-17 third-quarter hole. Card had some strong moments, and he had to work the second half and overtime with star sophomore wideout Xavier Worthy sidelined as his teammates dropped a few passes. In the first half, Card bounced back from an interception by hitting Worthy for a 39-yard touchdown. He also connected with running back Keilan Robinson for a 35-yard touchdown on Texas' opening drive. But Texas Tech only allowed 74 passing yards in the second half, 46 of which came during the final possession of regulation. With just 21 seconds left, Card connected with three different wideouts to line up sophomore kicker Bert Auburn’s game-tying 48-yard field goal as time expired.Texas got the ball to start overtime. And Sarkisian made the usually wise decision to hand off to one of the most talented running backs in the country. The idea was to get Tech's linebackers flowing in the opposite direction while Robinson cut up into the crease his linemen would open. And Robinson, as he tends to do, knifed through the gap – he just happened to slam right into super senior linebacker Krishon Merriweather.
