Over 150 people have died, and there is widespread devastation left behind by the storm - prompting Long Islanders to step up.
“Everybody just jumps in, we experienced the same thing during Sandy so we know," says Ben Jackson, the president of Ben’s General Contracting.
Donation drives are popping up islandwide, including one being run by Ben’s Contracting and Hope Floats throughout this week. If the donations exceed one truckload, additional trips south will be made. Theresa DePietto, the executive director of Hope Floats Long Island, told News 12 that they are looking for gloves, cleaning supplies, large trash bags and other essentials.
Larry Torres, the director of emergency preparedness for PSEG, tells News 12 that 50 line workers have been sent to North Carolina to provide aid. Red Cross Long Island CEO Jose Dominguez says they sent volunteers from across the nation, including six from Nassau and Suffolk counties. They are focusing on helping provide shelter and necessities to the victims.
