Dallas Cowboys tight end Gavin Escobar, shown catching a touchdown pass during a 2014 game against the New York Giants in Arlington, Texas, was found dead Wednesday in an apparent rock climbing accident near Idyllwild. The Riverside County sheriff’s coroner’s office on Thursday identified Escobar, a 31-year-old who starred at Santa Margarita High and San Diego State, along with one other climber, 33-year-old Chelsea Walsh.
Escobar was the Cowboys’ second-round pick in 2013 and spent three seasons with them. He also had brief stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins. He last played in the NFL in 2018, finishing his career with 30 catches and eight touchdowns, then played in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football in 2019.
