USS Midway gets clearance from San Diego port commissioners to begin work on a $65 million veterans memorial park atop Navy Pier, which will first require demolishing the Navy's long vacant headhouse.
A decades-long plan to build a bayfront park alongside the USS Midway Museum took a huge leap forward Tuesday when Port of San Diego commissioners approved a contract to demolish a long-vacant building on downtown's Navy Pier. The demolition of what was the Navy's former headhouse, located near the entrance to the pier, is a critical first step before the Midway can break ground next year on the nearly 4-acre park.
The USS Midway is responsible for paying the bill, although the port is contributing a $2 million federal grant to help defray the cost. Although the museum had pledged as recently as two years ago to spend at least $30 million on the memorial park, the cost has mushroomed since then. Of the expected $65 million cost, the Midway's share will be about $53 million, which will come from a combination of private fundraising and a capital commitment, said museum spokesperson Dave Koontz.
