Harry Daniel Jersig pursued his passion for recreation while turning the beverage into “the national beer of Texas,” even moving Buckhorn Saloon to the brewery.
First of two columns This is a story told in my family and I wonder how true it is. My father worked at Southwest Research for over 30 years, and one of his best friends was George McKinney. George and his wife lived on a beautiful ranch on the Balcones Creek where Bexar , Kendall and Bandera counties converge. The ranch had been in his family for decades, andGeorge raised cattle. The McKinney Ranch shared its western boundary with the Double D Ranch , owned by Harry Jersig of Lone Star Beer . Mr.
Lone Star Brewing Co. brought mass-produced beer to San Antonio Originally from Comfort, he attended Main Avenue High School . His first wife was Kathleen Willis , a fellow Main Avenue graduate with whom he had his first child, also named Kathleen. The first Mrs. Jersig died in 1927 of complications from surgery, and Jersig remarried. His second wife was Mildred Lauraine Miller , who went by her more glamorous middle name — and had a second daughter, Laurene, with her.

He acquired the old-timey Buckhorn Saloon, founded in 1881, with its collection of hunting trophies. He restored it on the brewery’s campus in 1956, where it was joined by a Hall of Fins in 1964 and a Hall of Feathers in 1973.

They entertained a lot, often for hunting weekends at their Auerhahn Ranch west of Boerne. Their 1,500-acre ranch was named for a game bird, also known as a wood grouse, that fascinated Jersig.
