A wildlife sanctuary has denied any animal welfare concerns after it scrapped its koala cuddling experiences. Despite calls for the practice to be banned in Queensland, the premier says that won't happen.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary denies animal welfare concerns prompted its decision to end its popular koala cuddling service.Queensland Premier Steven Miles says there are no plans to ban koala cuddling or patting across the state.
The popular Lone Pine koala cuddling experience has historically been booked out weeks, and sometimes months, in advance."We want to make it very clear that this is not a welfare decision. This is just an expectation that we have seen a change in our visitor interactions." "Tourists want to be close to koalas, but are we looking after the wellbeing of the animal or the wellbeing of the tourist?"
"What I can assure people is the environment department has very strong regulation of when and how animals can be exhibited and animals can be held," he said.
