Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin s, a mother and her offspring. When you are alone, especially for long periods of time, do you talk to yourself? If so, you’re in interesting company because a male Atlantic bottlenose dolphin who has been living alone in the Baltic Sea for more than three years, appears to be talking to himself.

The locals named the lone dolphin Delle, but later, he was identified as individual #1022, named Yoda, from the photo identification catalogue of Moray Firth, Scotland. According to the catalogue, Delle/Yoda is a male born in 2007. The dolphin has distinctive notches on the dorsal fin, making him easy to distinguish from other individuals, as revealed by the photographs of Delle/Yoda posted almost daily by the locals in a Facebook group dedicated to him.

“There is a theory that it is a way how a species slowly expands its range — some individuals are more adventurous and novelty-seeking, and they are at the avant-garde of a species expansion,” Dr Filatova told me in email. “If the habitat is good, others will follow later.

Interestingly, Dr Filatova and collaborators identified recorded sounds that are associated with communications between dolphins — sounds that Dr Filatova and collaborators interpreted as Delle/Yoda ‘talking to himself’. But because he was surrounded by people for years, was it possible that he might be talking to them? Probably not. Dr Filatova and collaborators found that Delle/Yoda would “talk” when no humans were around, indicating he was not trying to communicate with them.
