U.S. Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger underscored the significant security threat posed by ' lone actors ' during the upcoming presidential inauguration events. Manger cited two recent incidents on Capitol Hill where individuals attempted to disrupt congressional proceedings with potentially violent tactics.

An estimated 250,000 ticketed guests are anticipated at the formal inauguration on January 20th, complemented by an additional 25,000 attendees expected at various demonstrations surrounding the Capitol on Inauguration Day. Recognizing the heightened security concerns, the inauguration and its associated events have been designated a 'National Special Security Event,' the highest federal protective status an event can attain.Manger emphasized that the 'biggest threat' remains the 'lone actor,' citing incidents involving individuals attempting to bring knives and a machete into the Capitol and another who set their car on fire near the Peace Circle. Capitol Police successfully intercepted these individuals before they could inflict harm, but the threat persists. The inauguration will be secured similarly to the recent high-profile National Special Security Events, such as the presidential election certification and the late President Jimmy Carter's funeral. However, it will receive additional support from approximately 4,000 local law enforcement officers volunteering their assistance and an estimated 7,800 National Guard soldiers deployed to the nation's capital. In total, around 25,000 law enforcement officers will be on duty. To fortify security, the district anticipates 12 different First Amendment demonstrations during the inauguration, with authorities emphasizing peaceful protest and a zero-tolerance policy for violence. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith stressed that 'violence, destruction and unlawful behavior will not be tolerated,' with offenders facing swift and decisive consequences. Secret Service Special Agent in Charge of the Washington field office, Matt McCool, highlighted the 'slightly more robust security plan' compared to the 2021 inauguration, emphasizing lessons learned from previous National Special Security Events. McCool expressed full confidence in the security plan, assuring that both the public and protectees will remain safe
