Campaigners say the tunnel will mean more traffic and congestion in Newham and Greenwich.
For the first time, Transport for London has invited journalists inside what is one of the most controversial infrastructure projects in the capital.
Mr Khan gave the tunnel the go-ahead, funded with a Private Finance Initiative against future earnings. The cost was £2.2bn. Campaigners say it will just attract more HGVs to the area and around 20,000 extra vehicles a day will use the tunnel.Karin Tearle is from the Stop Silvertown Tunnel campaign group.
"And until we know something about the tolling regime and whether it will be the same as Dartford or whether it will be more expensive than Dartford, I don't think we can have any confidence that we won't be deluged with lorries."We have distribution centres spring up all around so obviously the people who like the lorries are going to be very well placed now to have a proper north south connection across the river.
"The idea that a cyclist will put their bike onto the bus, then get onto the bus to sit in the traffic. Ludicrous."TfL's director for investment planning, David Rowe, says a key target is to reduce overall pollution and they will do that through tolls.

Transport for London prosecutes more fare evadersTransport for London (TfL) has prosecuted over 19,500 people for fare evasion, with an increase of half compared to the previous year. TfL has improved its ability to detect and investigate offenders through its irregular travel analysis platform (ITAP). It has also raised the penalty fare from £80 to £100.
