London's White Cube opens its first New York art gallery with a show focused on how contemporary art can reference and distort prior creations to resist established power and value systems.
White Cube, the London-based gallery that helped shape the Young British Artist movement, has opened its first permanent U.S. branch in New York.
"It's important that what we do bring to New York is something that is fresh and new, and that we're able to carve a space out for ourselves, not only in the work that we show, but also the dialogue and the conversations that we're able to have," Willis Blair told NPR's"We are absolutely artist-focused...
When Jay Jopling founded White Cube 30 years ago, it was just a tiny room tucked on Duke Street in a part of central London — which is home to many traditional fine art dealers. He helped launch the careers of a group of irreverent artists like Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Sarah Luca who collectively became known as the Young British Artists and ultimately dominated the London art scene in the 1990s.
The gallery has had temporary outposts in Aspen and West Palm Beach. But the New York space is its first permanent U.S. location., 1972-2021. Black paint and metal chrome on BMWR75/5 motorcycle. "This masculine sort of confrontational object has this really beautiful, poetic, tender even, story. It's really sort of a love letter, an offering for Barbara," Willis Blair explained.
"It meant the world to me to have a gallery like White Cube with the history that White Cube has to be invested in what I had to say, to offer me a platform to say it in the way that I wanted to say it without limiting my voice," she said.
