Loki composer Natalie Holt discusses returning for season 2 and expanding the show’s unique musical landscape with new themes and instruments.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Loki season 2 has continued to cement Tom Hiddleston’s Loki as one of the richest characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Visually bold, emotionally complex, and fun to boot, Loki season 2 ups the ante from the first season while still giving the show’s original cast of characters plenty of room to shine. Even as Loki season 2 sets up Avengers 5, it manages to stand on its own as one of Marvel’s best projects of 2023.
I love all the places that you get to go, musically, this season. You have the ‘70s theme and you have the 1800s music. Is there a time period that was the hardest to write for, or that required the most research? I also love your instrument choices. I’m obsessed with Theremins, and I know you have Nyckelharpa and stuff in this season. When you're writing for these things, how much are you researching correct articulations and stuff, or would you rather just work with a player and talk through the capabilities of the instrument with them?
Natalie Holt: There are synth patches, there’s a recorder and a sheng in it. I did a layer of string pizzicato, but then I ran it through a processor so it sounded a bit gnarly. Then, there was a little 808 beat in there, a retro sort of ticking along. There are some clocks. Oh, and some kitchen sink percussion as well. That seemed to fit the character and his workshop, which was slightly chaotic.
