A sister and teenage brother of Wilber Romero escaped fire that destroyed family home Oct 13, 2019; both offered words of and support in San Diego Superior Court on Friday
Their parents died. Their sister died. Their older brother admitted setting the fire that tore through the family’s Logan Heights home two years ago, killing all three.
Superior Court Judge Kenneth So handed down the lengthy sentence, which he said was a “reasonable way to resolve this case, a case that is just so sad.” His father, Jose Antonio Romero, 44, died inside the home. His mother, Nicolasa “Nico” Mayo-Romero, 46, died in a hospital the next day. Two days after that, his sister, Iris Kristal Romero, 21, died.
In court, Deputy Public Defender Neil Besse said his client is grateful for his family’s support, “and he is looking forward to a future where he can return to that.”
