JAGM Quad Launcher demo validates vertical missile launch, LOAL targeting, and rapid reload for mobile counter-drone defense.

Lockheed Martin is advancing a vertical-launch missile concept that could reshape how U.S. forces counter drones across land and sea.In a recent live-fire event, the company demonstrated its JAGM Quad Launcher firing in a 90-degree configuration, validating a setup that removes the need for traditional forward-facing launchers.

Unlike angled launch systems, vertical launch allows operators to fire from confined spaces without repositioning. That capability supports deployments on compact naval decks, mobile vehicles, and forward bases where space and reaction time are limited.

Vertical launch engineeringLockheed Martin designed JQL around a modular, open-architecture framework. The system integrates with existing combat networks through its Launcher Management Assembly, enabling both local and remote weapon control.

This architecture allows rapid software upgrades and sensor integration without hardware redesign.“In today’s rapid-pace environment, where information, data and threats evolve faster than ever, flexibility and versatility are essential to stay ahead of adversary threats,” said Felipe Benvegnu, Lockheed Martin Mission System & Weapons Business Development Director.

The launcher’s pivot mechanism supports both angled and vertical firing modes. This design simplifies loading while maintaining flexibility across mission profiles.Engineers also incorporated a marinized structure to withstand harsh maritime conditions, extending its use to surface combatants.

Another key feature is the self-contained gas management system. It safely vents missile exhaust during vertical launches, reducing risk to personnel and nearby equipment.Combined with rapid reload capability, the system allows crews to sustain continuous operations with minimal downtime.

Dual-mode missile capabilityJoint Air-to-Ground Missile plays a central role in the concept. The missile uses a dual-mode seeker that combines semi-active laser guidance with millimeter-wave Doppler radar.

This enables detection and tracking of low-signature drones in all weather and lighting conditions.JAGM also supports lock-on-after-launch targeting. Operators can fire before establishing a full lock, then guide the missile mid-flight using sensor inputs.

This improves engagement flexibility, especially in dynamic threat environments.“JAGM delivers the same lethality as a purpose-built C-UAS system but at a fraction of the cost per shot, giving our users a truly cost-effective, layered-defense option,” said Casey Walsh, Lockheed Martin Multi-Domain Missile Systems Program Director.

The cost profile makes JAGM suitable for layered defense architectures. It can operate alongside electronic warfare and directed-energy systems, providing a kinetic option when other measures fail.

The January demonstration used a 6×6 ground platform developed by Richard Childress Racing.Known as the Mothership, the vehicle supports integration of missiles and unmanned systems, creating a mobile launch platform.

Engineers mounted the JQL onto the vehicle to validate ground-based vertical launch operations. The test confirmed that the system can deliver full 360-degree coverage without requiring vehicle repositioning.

RCR has leveraged its motorsports engineering expertise to enter the defense sector. Its manufacturing capabilities now support high-precision components for aerospace and military applications.

Lockheed Martin is also expanding the concept into maritime domains. The company plans further demonstrations with Saildrone to integrate vertical-launch missiles with autonomous vessels.

These tests aim to combine fleet defense, surveillance, and strike capabilities within a single platform. As drone threats continue to evolve, the focus is shifting toward adaptable systems that can deploy quickly across environments.

Vertical-launch integration with a proven missile platform offers a scalable path forward for U.S. layered defense strategies.
