Canandaigua, N.Y. (WHAM) April 8's total solar eclipse is inching closer, and the fascinating phenomenon is becoming an exciting lesson for local students.

Get ready for April 8 by checking out our Total Solar Eclipse page, with everything you need to know for the big day!Dan Robbins, an Earth science teacher at Canandaigua Academy, is teaching his students all about eclipses ahead of April 8's total solar eclipse.

"It's been a topic of conversation," Robbins said. "It is definitely a current event that kids are very excited about. So we are going to harness that curiosity and make it a teachable moment." Students got a chance to simulate the phases of the moon in a hands-on activity, and learned that a total solar eclipse can only happen in the "new moon" phase, when the moon is directly between the Earth and the sun.

"It's a good example of showing the moon's path how you see it everyday," Welch explained. "I got my glasses. I should be going to my grandparents who have a big field, so I'll have a good view of it. It's really cool a bunch of people are coming from all over just to watch."
