Pieter Reichel from Kingfisher Avenue in Freeway Park is still shocked by the damage caused by the 4.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Ekurhuleni on June 11.

Reichel explained he was still sleeping in the rented flat when everything started to shake due to the quake at about 02:39. “I heard a loud noise and thought Judgement Day is upon us. It was horrible. I live with my two cats and they were unsettled. I had to put them under a blanket just to calm them down. They are still afraid if they hear loud noise now,” said Reichel.The damage to the flat that Pieter Reichel is renting.

“There are cracks in the wall and some glass broke. I was even trapped because the ceiling fell against the front door. I had to remove it before I could leave. At least I can still sleep in the flat. There is no damage in the bed or bathroom, which I’m grateful for.Reichel said there was also damage at his workplace, which is a building on the same premises as his flat. This includes cracked tiles.
