Help for homeless people is making steady progress in Thurston County, as human services organizations create a far-reaching database on all the single adults who are living on the streets. Thurston County is just the fifth in the nation to create a comprehensive list of every unhoused adult individual, according to a press release from Keybridge Communications which is based in Washington, D.C.
Many cities rely on Point-In-Time counts, where volunteers fan out over a single night in January to tally how many people are living unsheltered. The Thurston County Homeless Crisis Response System and its community partners have been tracking each person’s name and the circumstances of their homelessness so their needs can be met more quickly once those resources become available, according to the press release.
The most recent PIT count, Thurston County had 864 people experiencing homelessness when the survey was conducted on Jan. 25. That is an increase of about 120 people over the previous year. The count included people staying in emergency shelters, transitional housing, encampments, RVs and other places not meant for human habitation.
