Montgomery, Alabama

D.A.T.S.M.O.M., which stands for Disability as an Ability toward Success: Moms on the Move, is a non-profit organization in the city of Montgomery

that provides resources and programs for families with children on the autism spectrum. The founder of D.A.T.S.M.O.M., Tametria Conner Dantzler, partnered with the Bell Road YMCA to create ‘Swimming around the Spectrum.’ ‘Swimming around the Spectrum’ is a free program where youths, ages 2 to 21, on the spectrum can learn how to swim with a trained instructor at the Bell Road YMCA. The program has small classes with only 2 to 6 kids in a session three times a week, once a month. The classes are tailored to each individual child who are all at different levels and different swimming abilities.

The swimming lessons teach the kids a fun new skill, and most importantly: water safety. Whether a kid falls into a pool or they have inappropriate behaviors in the water due to their special needs, these lessons will help them practice so they will know how to react. ‘Swimming around the Spectrum’ is the first of it’s kind in the River Region and have already served over 30 families.or call them at 659-6013.
