The Jacksonville Beach resident grabbed the fourth and final spot for the U.S. Open after finishing in a tie for third for qualifying in the BallenIsles Country Club event on Monday. Russell jumped up 11 spots after a final round 5-under 67. Russell, the dynamic 17-year-old golf prodigy, finished at 6-under 138.
Russell was one of 715 players scattered at 10 qualifiers around the country and Canada trying to earn one of 43 spots for the 126U.S. Open. And Russell had a familiar face on his bag Monday, none other than Charlie Woods, the son of golf legend Tiger Woods.
“It kept it so light,” Russell told the Associated Press. “It’s the first time I’ve had a buddy on the bag. I really like it, not talking much golf, just having a good time. ”In qualifying in Westerville, Ohio, St. Simons Island resident Davis Thompson won at 11-under 133 to earn a U.S. Open spot.
Jacksonville Beach resident Jackson Suber had a 10-under 132 to win the Rockville, Maryland qualifier, three shots in front of Ponte Vedra Beach resident Ben Kohles . Billy Horschel finished in a tie for third to nab a qualifying spot in the Springfield, Ohio qualifier. Horschel shot a 7-under 133.
