Several staff members at a Girl Scouts summer camp in Dauphin County were let go recently following a situation involving one of the camper's pronouns.
According to a statement from Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, one of the summer camp participants, who is a biological girl, identified as a boy and used male pronouns. Some staff members reportedly "intentionally withheld this situation" from camp leaders, which the organization said goes against how it directs its staff to deal with "situations of a sensitive nature.
"While Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania is committed to inclusivity, identifying as a boy and using male pronouns becomes a complex issue in a setting that is a space just for girls," Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania said in its statement. "This introduces subject matter that may be considered sensitive or not appropriate to discuss in a youth program setting without staff who are specially trained.
The staff members were given an opportunity to commit to being transparent about any "sensitive camper issues" in the future, the organization said, and when they did not agree, the staff members were let go.The full statement from Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania can be read below.
