A woman in her 70s was hurt during the robbery, where two suspects got away with $200,000 in cash.
SAN LEANDRO — A man carrying a briefcase with $200,000 in cash was robbed by two suspects who made off in a luxury car, according to police who say they suspect an East Bay gang.
Police say there are indications the suspects followed the victims home from a San Leandro bank on East 14th Street, where they’d withdrawn the cash. As the couple was arriving home, two men ran up, grabbed the 73-year-old man’s suitcase that contained the cash, and knocked down his wife, who was hurt, but not seriously.
The suspects ran away and escaped in a Mercedes Benz, police say. A short time later, an officer noticed a similar Mercedes traveling in a nearby part of town at high speeds, but the officer was on his way to a call involving a suicidal person and didn’t have time to pull the car over for speeding, authorities said. The officer didn’t learn of the robbery until later.
Detectives have not announced any arrests, but continue to investigate leads that indicate members of an East Oakland gang were involved in the robbery, authorities said.
