JOHOR BARU: Middle Eastern students furthering their tertiary education here have praised the Ramadan culture in Malaysia.

Among them is Iraqi national Abdulrahman Zahid, 30, who is completing his PhD in civil engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia here.

“It is such a beautiful culture, and I am glad that I got to experience making the porridge at my university twice since I arrived here four years ago,” he said yesterday. “Back home, we will normally break our fast at home. We prepare all the food ourselves. In fact, all restaurants are closed come breaking of fast time and they will only be opened after the Maghrib prayers.

Oumaima, who is completing her PhD in bio-science at UTM, said she also appreciates the way her non-Muslim friends here respect those who are fasting. She said the culture of having open houses for a whole month during Hari Raya Aidilfitri is also something that she found interesting in Malaysia. Sudanese Eihab Jameilalla Mahmoud Hamoud, 30, said that despite being away from home, he was still able to experience some common aspects of the fasting month here.
