Local Colleges Report: CSUSM, SDSU struggle to start NCAA golf tournaments

San Diego’s two golf teams in NCAA tournaments played better Tuesday, but continued to be below the cutline entering Wednesday’s final qualifying rounds. Cal State San Marcos played an even-par round in the NCAA Division II Championships in Boulder City, Nev.

, but is tied for 13th and nine strokes outside the final qualifying post. Liam Weaver, Gavin McCormick and Kai Miyata are the top CSUSM individuals. All three are at even-par 144 and tied for 39th. San Diego State improved by 10 strokes during the second day of the NCAA Division I Marana Regionals outside Tucson, but is still 13th among 14 teams headed into Wednesday’s final round. Mountain West Golfer of the Year Harry Takis shot a 6-under-par 66 Tuesday to move up into a tie for 14th place. Tyler Kowack shot a 76 and is now tied for 39th. Nathan Sampson shot a 74 Tuesday and is tied for 62nd.

Kai Hirayama improved six strokes to a 73 and is tied for 64th. Beau Sahr shot an 83. Thirteenth-ranked Findlay eliminated 21st-ranked Point Loma Nazarene 4-1 Tuesday morning in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz. Perla Conde Vendrell scored PLNU’s only point with a 6-4, 6-1 win in singles, although she and Anna Kupfer also won their doubles set.

Zoe Moley was winning her singles match when the winning point was scored and Kupfer was even at 1-1. Triple-jumper Jordyn Brooks will be the only athlete from Cal State San Marcos competing in the NCAA Division II Women’s Track and Field Championships this weekend in Emporia, Kan. Brooks had a qualifying mark of 40 feet, 1/3 inch. UC San Diego’s Sylvana Northrop almost scored a difficult double at the Big West Conference Track & Field Championships at UC Irvine.

The graduate student from Cupertino won the 5,000-meter run in 16 minutes, 13.96 seconds after finishing second in the 1,500 . She was the only Triton to win an event, and the UCSD women finsihed fourth. The Tritons’ men finished fifth.
