This insightful dive into a tradition that is the root of much debate was directed by Sihle Hlophe. It follows Hlophe, a recently engaged film maker as she turns the lens on her own life and shares her apprehensions, queries and reservations around dowry culture, and pokes and prods at the themes of patriarchy and heteronormative elements that define lobola.
Hlophe is also thrust into a difficult and delicate situation after the passing of her father ahead of her own lobola negotiations, which adds to the stress she appears to incur on this journey of love and cultural expectancy. Lobola, A Bride’s True Price? had its world premiere at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, US, in February.
