“It’s not the county’s job to burn the library down.' Llano County library branches will stay open. County commissioners had considered closing the libraries in response to a ruling from a federal judge who ordered banned books returned to the shelves.

Outside the Llano County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, Amanda Starkes and her mother Brenda embrace Suzette Baker after the announcement that the Llano Public Library will remain open. Baker and Starkes were both terminated from the library branch in Kingsland. After disagreements over banning books and a vote on whether or not to close the libraries, the county ruled that the branches will remain open.

“You could tell who was with who — and who wasn’t,” Kennedy said, describing the divided opinions inside the tight courtroom.“It’s not the county’s job to burn the library down,” said James Arno, a 10-year Llano resident, moments after he testified. Residents outside the Llano County Sheriff’s Office listen to a livestream of a public meeting occurring inside about closing the public library.Just then, another person emerged and shared the news: The Llano library would remain open. Commissioners voted to take the item of the library’s closure off the agenda, alleviating the immediate threat.to return to the library system books they’d removed.

According to a statement from county officials, it was the individuals suing the library who were responsible for endangering the community resource.
