Liz Truss always knew she would have enemies. The Prime Minister said she was willing to be “unpopular”. She sacked almost every minister who backed her rival Rishi Sunak, reasoning that only true believers could be trusted to help deliver her radical agenda.supporters of Mr Sunak are already talking about deposing Ms Truss and replacing her with the former chancellorBut it is perhaps even more worrying for the Prime Minister that she is starting to clash with some of her friends too.
Jacob Rees-Mogg is a true believer in Ms Truss’s mission to shrink the state and cut taxes. As Business Secretary, he has been entrusted with the crucial task of rewiring Britain’s energy supply.. Mr Rees-Mogg wants to launch a government information campaign over the coming months to persuade households to use less electricity and gas if they can, and shift their usage outside peak times. No 10 has briefed newspapers that it has blocked this proposal because it would be too “nanny statist”.
For a political party to have dissident voices can be a sign of health, showing that it is home to differing ideological traditions. But public disagreement within the Cabinet is often fatal: if the top executive team is disunited, how can it deliver? Ms Truss is in serious difficulty. Her premiership is not doomed, but she needs to put a lid on the squabbling now or her dreams of transforming Britain will crumble to dust.
