For these three, they are still serving generals in a Tory civil war that refuses to be over. They are still MPs in a parliament seething with fury and speculation over the future of the Conservative party. There are even some MPs who want Mr Johnson back as prime minister.
Yet it is Ms Truss’ presence at these events that feels the strangest. She was prime minister for only 49 days, and yet will haunt the Cenotaph and every major royal outing for, potentially, decades to come. It is even possible that Ms Truss will spend more days at these events than she did leading her government.
In a way, this club you can never check out of serves as a political cautionary tale: you can spend most of the year, if you wish, hiding out of sight in a or a Dubai conference centre, but whatever you do to the country will be routinely remembered, in the full spotlight of a nationwide audience, and often in the presence of a man or woman of God., crashing the pound and pushing up interest rates for years to come. And if we are unable to forget it, neither should she.
