'We’ll see how Kemi’s vote breaks tomorrow, I think Liz will get some, Rishi will get some, Penny maybe not,' one MP tells i
Ms Mordaunt praised Mrs Badenoch’s “fresh thinking” and “bold policies”, adding: “She and I both know that the old way of government isn’t working as it should. But MPs suggestedof former Tom Tugendhat supporter and Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan, was likely to overhaul her.
Arch backbench organiser Steve Baker, who is supporting Ms Truss, told reporters: “I would have thought most of the people who are attracted to Kemi, I would have thought they are mostly not attracted to Penny.: “We’ll see how Kemi’s vote breaks tomorrow, I think Liz will get some, Rishi will get some, Penny maybe not.”Supporters of Mr Sunak and Ms Truss also continued to attack Ms Mordaunt, an approach which appears to have worked in stalling a campaign that was surging last week.
A minister backing Mr Sunak said: “I have tried to find out more about Penny and I can’t find anything that she has done. I have searched and I found the magician thing, the belly flop and the fact she did a bit of PR around here, but what else has she done?”“I think the membership would take a very dim view if the parliamentary party did not put forward the two most substantive candidates in the final round,” they said.
Mr Sunak’s campaign meanwhile focused on polls showing that he could beat Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and “is the candidate the public think would make the best PM”.She tweeted: “This campaign began less than two weeks ago. What we’ve achieved demonstrates the level of support for our vision of change for our country and for the Conservative Party.”
