Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was given a rare start by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp , who partnered Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah up top, while Robin Olsen came in for the World Cup Emiliano Martinez who was absent for the hosts.
Nunez looked to add a second goal for the visitors 25 minutes gone in the way of a half-volley from a looping ball over the top, but Olsen was equal to the task. Ollie Watkins seemed to have halved the deficit for Villa seconds from the break with a powerful low finish in the area following a through ball, but was called for offside.
