The Italian community off Scottie Road left their mark on Liverpool

But they were once home to a community of Italian families who left their mark on Liverpool, from the instruments they played to the mosaics they laid in St George's Hall and some of the city's famous buildings on William Brown Street.

"It's not just about ice-cream, it's not just about playing the accordion. It's about the lifetime of stories that will always be there." "They packed up everything they had and followed suit [of other Italians]. They came here legally, they were all happy to set up businesses, to set up work and create a community within the Irish community which was off Vauxhall Road and Scottie Road, so that became Little Italy.

They include: Gerard Gardens, Fontenoy Gardens and Blackstock Gardens. By the time World War II came, many Italians living in the city were interrogated by police and sent to an internment camp on the Woolfall Heath estate in Huyton after being deemed a potential threat to national security. "He had a picture of them in their uniforms and had to put them in his windows in Little Italy to say my boys are fighting for Britain."

"They made a valuable contribution to the ice cream business because they made the best ice-cream and the best chips. I think, generally speaking, they were a [community] prepared to work, prepared to make a valuable contribution to Liverpool. The Capaldi family is well known across Liverpool for the days when they sold their ice-cream from hand carts and later at their cafés in Wavertree Road and Kensington. The cafés were initially run by Mario's Liverpool-born grandad Antonio, who previously sold ice-cream in Little Italy, and then dad Armando, known by many as 'Mandy'.
