Gas engineer Asif Hussain said he was being called out to more cases of gas thefts.
Liverpool had the highest number of confirmed gas thefts in the north-west of England over the past year, according to gas company Cadent.Figures from April 2023 to July 2024 showed Liverpool had 269 confirmed gas thefts compared with Manchester's 179.
Cadent's director of safety, Dave Garner, said gas thefts could create leaks which could "go on to create a gas explosion which can have devastating consequences".“Meter tampering, interfering with your pipe work or interfering with your appliances can be really, really dangerous," Mr Garner said. “Gas theft is a situation where someone looks to take their gas for free and meter tampering is one way in which people do this."The North West was the third highest region in England, with West Midlands topping the list and London second.Gas engineer Asif Hussain said he was being called to more cases of gas thefts."There has been reports where people will just literally rob your meter. While gas theft is not a new phenomenon, gas companies said they were worried about the increase.
"We have no hard evidence that links the increase in the numbers of cases to the cost of living situation that we're all facing," Mr Garner said. The Cadent Foundation has set up a £2m emergency support fund and works with charities to help some of the poorest households.
