Louisiana’s senior GOP senator offers bipartisan backup to the Democratic governor’s go-slow approach to reopening
NEW YORK — Federal prosecutors have filed criminal charges against a Long Island apparel store owner on accusations of hoarding personal protection equipment while inflating prices — the first case of its kind to be filed under the Defense Production Act.
From March 25 to April 8, Singh received 40 shipments of face masks, 14 shipments of surgical gowns , as well as eight orders of hand sanitizer , according to the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York, which filed the charges Friday. Prosecutors allege that Singh allegedly resold one type of N95 mask for $7 each after paying $2.60 for them, a markup of more than 150 percent. Disposable face masks that he purchased for about $3 were allegedly resold for $10, while 32-ounce bottles of hand sanitizer purchased at $8.50 were marked up to $25.
Singh’s lawyer Bradley Gerstman said the warnings from local authorities were unrelated to what Singh is accused of in a criminal complaint. Gerstman also said Singh’s purchase invoices will show that he was doing business honestly.
