Rishi Sunak and his center-right Conservative Party may be on the way out, replaced by Keir Starmer and the left-leaning Labour Party.
LONDON — One of the big surprises of the night was the projection that Nigel Farage’s right-wing populist party, Reform UK, will win 13 seats. While that is still a small number, it is larger than previous polls suggested. The trend toward the far right in Britain is “more muted or less easy to see” than in France, or in a different way in the United States, said Tony Travers, a politics professor at the London School of Economics. “In the U.S.
, there is a kind of cult around the individual, the Republican Party has turned into a party around one individual with a very particular view, which many in Europe find shocking,” he said. In France, the National Rally has been trying “for decades to grow, step by step, gradually becoming more respectable over time, getting a bigger share of the vote.” He noted that Reform in the United Kingdom is a different beast.
