Iran launched dozens of missiles from its territory toward Israel, according to the Israeli military. The vast majority of missiles were intercepted outside Israeli territory by Israel’s aerial defense systems, the military said. Israel's military said more than 200 'threats' were launched and that it continues to intercept strikes. Iran's foreign ministry said the attack was in retaliation for an Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus earlier this month.
US air defense systems in the Middle East also intercepted some Iranian drones, according to two US officials. US President Joe Biden, who met with his national security team in Washington on Saturday, said in a social media post the US' commitment to Israel’s security against Iranian threats 'is ironclad.' The retaliatory attack comes as Iran seized a container ship Saturday near the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened regional tensions as the Israel-Hamas war rages on.
