Bill Shorten’s friend and fellow Victorian Labor powerbroker Richard Marles has issued a statement about this morning’s news. “More than any other person, I have shared my life in politics with Bill Shorten,” the defence minister said. “We have known each other since we’ve been teenagers and throughout that time I have had the honour to call Bill my friend.
“His values of service translated to his leadership of the Australian Labor Party. After the 2013 election loss, Bill led the ALP for six years and played a central role in rebuilding Labor’s stocks. His efforts were critical to our ultimate electoral success in 2022. “Over the past five years, Bill has been dedicated to delivering a more sustainable and fairer National Disability Insurance Scheme, about which he has demonstrated an abiding passion.
