Columbia earlier began suspending students who refused to leave a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus grounds after negotiations failed to come to a resolution.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill canceled its remaining classes Tuesday afternoon, citing “demonstrations on campus,” according to a notification from the school’s emergency alert system. Encampments have been set up on the campus since the weekend, and school police had detained about 30 people at pro-Palestinian protests Tuesday morning, school officials said. At least three people were ultimately arrested, according to arrest logs posted by the police department.
Interim Chancellor Lee Roberts and Provost Christopher Clemens asked protesters to leave Polk Place, the campus quad, by 6 a.m. or face arrest, suspension or expulsion from the university, according to a notice from the school. “Protesters attempted to block the UNC Police vehicles by standing in front of them and throwing items at officers,” school officials said. The area was cleared within 45 minutes, officials said.
