The president advocated for non-violence and defended the right to free speech. Overnight, a pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA was dismantled and 90 were arrested at Dartmouth.
Matt Barreto, a professor of Chicano studies and political science at UCLA, said in an interview that Thursday morning’s violence by police is part of a long history of the university using police force on peaceful civil disobedience, from recent Black Lives Matter protests, to the founding of his Chicano studies department in the early 90s.
“I spent the night with diverse faculty and students who were in the encampment, including those who took my classes and know me by name.” He said the demonstrations could have been handled peacefully, like at Brown University or Northwestern, where the administrations are listening to student demands on divestment and other issues. “Despite that example, UCLA once again did the opposite,” Barreto said. “It’s so frustrating because the night before, on Tuesday, they stood by and did nothing.
