Live updates: Biden says he will visit Texas as more details of school shooting emerge

President Biden said “common sense” gun control would not “negatively affect” the Second Amendment, and added that the amendment is “not absolute.”

Authorities continue investigating several lingering questions related to Tuesday’s massacre at Robb Elementary, including whether the gunman had any ties to the school, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety said Wednesday.

The gunman, Salvador Rolando Ramos, 18, was fatally shot after killing at least 19 children and two adults, and wounding others.a Border Patrol tactical team responding to the shooting scene “took care of the suspect,” but added that investigators were exploring whether Ramos may have shot himself. Officials later said at a news briefing that he was killed by law enforcement. The justice of the peace leading the inquest in the case, who is akin to a county coroner, said Wednesday that officials plan to conduct an autopsy of the gunman after finishing work on the victims. He saidOther questions remained a day after the shooting. Considine said Ramos had shot his grandmother before going to the school. The grandmother remained in critical condition late Wednesday morning, Considine said. Considine said Ramos bought his weapons — two rifles — sometime after his birthday this month. After the shooting, one was found with him and the other in the truck he had driven to the scene, Considine said. Officials were also still working to investigate whether Ramos had any connections to the school he attacked, Considine said. After shooting his grandmother, he then drove to the school and rammed through a nearby railing, prompting a 911 call from a resident who reported it and added that the driver apparently had a rifle, Considine said. The gunman encountered a school police officer and “they exchanged gunfire,” Considine said, with Ramos wounding the officer before heading inside. Two Uvalde police officers then showed up, Considine said, and tried to get inside, exchanging more gunfire with Ramos. They were both wounded, he said. Ramos then went to a fourth-grade classroom, where he barricaded himself and “does most, if not all, of his damage in that classroom.” The Border Patrol team that shot Ramos responded to the scene, Considine said, as did other law enforcement officials, who “were breaking windows and getting kids out.”
