LIVE | Ramaphosa denies the notion that he could be used as a politically connected person at Eskom. 'I reject that.'
He says this includes lobbying for the appointment of people. He says if it is meant to achieve illegal, unlawful ends, then it is wrong, but if it is to achieve a particular purpose – like having more women in the judiciary – he doesn't think there is something wrong with it.COMMENT: The key issue here is the ANC's lack of transparency in pushing for the appointment of judges through its deployment committee.
He cites the appointment of Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula as Speaker, as an example of transparency, where the ANC officials decided and it was taken to caucus, who decided to nominate her.Ramaphosa: I can say, as a deployee of the ANC, the fact that today we have so many female judicial officers, is because of the ANC's insistence."I would be the first to say you cannot, as the ANC, choose judges," he says.
Ramaphosa:"But the party is just one of the actors in our democracy. It's not the only actor, and in the end when we're talking about the state, you look at the state, what makes up the state is the three arms of the state - so the executive, the judiciary, and the legislature, and a whole number of other institutions that finally make up the broader state that we talk about."
