LIVE | Steenhuisen says Zuma's special remission is 'a comedy of epic proportions'

The National Freedom Party has been the first political party to welcome the decision by the Department of Correctional Services to give former president Jacob Zuma a remission status.

"The fact that the remission comes into effect today – the same day on which Zuma returns to prison to be"processed" is a clear indication of what has really occurred. Were this decision not a tragic deconstruction of the principle of equality before the Law, it would well pass for a comedy show," Breytenbach said.

Unfortunately, the current occupancy rate is 143%, with the overcrowding rate at 43.06%. The recent loss of 3 024 beds at Kutama Sinthumule due to fire means that overcrowding will increase by 4%, raising the overcrowding rate to 47.06%, and in turn, the occupancy rate will increase by 147 per cent. This decision will result in the deportation of 3064 foreign nationals serving short-term sentences under the guidance of the Department of Home Affairs.

The story of Zuma's 15-month sentence actually started more than five years ago, on 9 December 2015, when he abruptly fired the country's finance minister, Nhlanhla Nene, and replaced him with the unknown ANC MP Des van Rooyen.
