LIVE | NPA calls first witness in its first State Capture trial

Iqbal Sharma’s brother-in-law and a representative of Nulane Investments, Dinesh Patel has pleaded not guilty to the charge against him. He has made a series of admissions in relation to the case against him. His advocate Kenny Oldwadge SC is now reading those into the record. Patel admits that Sharma is his brother-in-law and admits a number of basic details about some of the companies accused by the state.

The state further alleges that Sharma, Nulane, Islandsite and Ragavan then embarked on a money-laundering exercise - in which the state says the Gupta brothers are implicated - to disguise the true source of the over R19 million they'd received as a result of the Nulane"scam".

The state has indicated that it has five potential first witnesses. At this point, we don't know who that first witness will be. But the case is expected to start soon. The case has yet to start. Instead, the court is empty while lawyers for the accused and state engage in behind the scenes discussions. It is unclear at this point what the hold up is.

Six months after they were arrested in Dubai, alleged state capture masterminds Atul and Rajesh remain behind bars - with justice authorities saying they are still waiting for"further information" about their potential extradition hearing. While it is unclear at this point why no date has been set for the National Prosecuting Authority's Gupta extradition application, the justice department has confirmed that UAE authorities contacted its officials late last year"to clarify some technical aspects of the extradition request".
