M61 remains shut tonight - latest
Police have closed the M61 northbound between junction 2 for Bolton and junction 4 for Atherton, National Highways have said. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
It comes after a car fire on the stretch of motorway. The carriageway had originally been re-opened but was then shut again at the request of police, travel agencies say. National Highways have tweeted: "Please be aware, the #M61 northbound between J2 #Bolton and J4 #Atherton is now fully CLOSED at the request of @NWmwaypolice Diversion details to follow."
