Media Watch’s Paul Barry running ‘blatantly false’ government ‘talking points’ on superThis week ABC’s Media Watch host Paul Barry was “most indignant” at the media’s criticism of the Albanese government for “breaking its election promise” on super, says Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton. Mr Barry said somehow the changes became “an attack on all Australians”, even though they will initially affect “only 80,000 taxpayers who have more than $3 million in their super funds”. “But what Barry failed to mention is that those indexation will change those numbers completely. As the AFR reported, the number of people affected could climb into the hundreds of thousands eventually due to inflation,” Mr Houghton said. “How's that for Barry's so-called 'modest' proposal?' Mr Barry further said, “The superannuation tax changes proposed by Labor won’t take effect until 2025, and they’ll only go ahead if voters re-elect this government, but that didn’t stop TV and the tabloids branding it a broken promise and a breach of trust”. “Labor will legislate changes this year. That makes it a very clear broken promise, but that doesn't stop Barry from running government talking points which are blatantly false,” Mr Houghton said.

Paul Keating’s comments do ‘nothing’ for Labor’s China ‘image issue’Recent comments by former prime minister Paul Keating do “nothing” to disarm concerns. Labor does not take the China threat seriously, says Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton. Mr Houghton said “important questions” were raised in the Sydney Morning Herald's defence investigation, ‘Red Alert: War Risk exposed’, about “how poorly equipped our military is to deal with conflict”. However, he said The Australian's Sophie Elsworth reported former Prime Minister Paul Keating was “terribly upset” at the newspaper, saying in a statement: “Today's Sydney Morning Herald and Age front page stories on Australia's supposed war risk with China represents the most egregious and provocative news presentation of any newspaper I have witnessed in over fifty years of active public life.” Mr Houghton said this was a “ludicrous response to legitimate journalism”. “Labor has an image issue with the perception it does not take the China threat seriously – these comments by Keating will do nothing to disarm those concerns.”
