While the conference hall is still filling up, there appears to be an overwhelming support for incumbent party leader John Steenhuisen who is seeking a second term. Delegates are wearing badges bearing his face and I have seen a few posters. I am yet to see any posters in support of Mpho Palatase but her supporters could still be en route.Delegates have started streaming in to attend the DA's elective conference in Johannesburg.
Addressing the media on the readiness of the party ahead of its federal congress, the presiding officer of the two-day gathering in Midrand, DA MP Gregory Krumbock, said this was a watershed moment, not only for the party, but the country's future. It's the party's largest to date. More than 2 000 delegates will be in attendance at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on Saturday and Sunday.
DA councillor Nora Grose's case of fraud and money laundering has been struck off the roll in the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court, and now she is gearing up for a legal battle.The DA's Tania Campbell has been removed as the mayor of Ekurhuleni via a no-confidence motion. On Thursday, Campbell was voted out by 126 votes in support of the motion, with 91 votes against. The ANC and the EFF, and a group of smaller political parties, brought the motion and supported its adoption.
