SAN ANTONIO - Multiple deaths have been reported in Texas after heavy rain caused flash flooding of a river, while search teams used boats to conduct rescues Friday as fast-moving water threatened riverfront communities near wildlife habitats and campgrounds.Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly confirmed six deaths from the catastrophic flooding, with the toll expected to rise, according to the Austin American-Statesman. At Comfort, the Guadalupe River surged to 29.86 feet after rising 22 feet in 30 minutes, while at Kerrville it rose 21.6 feet in one hour, now at 11.64 feet.As much as 10 inches of heavy rain fell in just a few hours overnight in central Kerr County, causing flash flooding of the Guadalupe River. A flood watch issued Thursday afternoon estimated isolated amounts up to seven inches. That shifted to a flood warning for at least 30,000 people overnight. The riverfront communities include several camps, wildlife habitats and campgrounds. Texas Game Wardens, part of the state parks and wildlife agency, said on Facebook that search and rescue teams are conducting rescues throughout the region and sending more boats to help. More heavy rain and storms are expected near Hunt and Ingram around 10 a.m., worsening conditions. Kerrville Police and Fire crews are evacuating residents amid widespread flooding. The National Weather Service warns this is a “very dangerous and life-threatening flood event,” with the river at Hunt at its second-highest recorded level, surpassing the 1987 flood. A wide range of state emergency resources has been deployed to support local flood response efforts. These include Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads from Texas A&M Task Force 1 and 3, rescue teams and helicopters from Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Department of Public Safety, and high-profile vehicles and Blackhawk helicopters from the Texas National Guard. Additional support comes from TxDOT for road monitoring, the Texas A&M Forest Service for debris removal, and AgriLife Extension for agricultural recovery. Agencies like the Public Utility Commission, Railroad Commission, TCEQ, and the Department of State Health Services are also assisting with power, environmental monitoring, and medical response. Bexar County has deployed emergency teams—including ambulances, rescue boats, drones, and Swiftwater Rescue Technicians—to support search and rescue efforts in the Hill Country following severe flooding. Power outages affect over 2,600 customers, mainly in Southeast Kerrville, Center Point, and Hunt. Flooding has delayed repairs, with downed power lines near Riverhill and Center Point making access unsafe. The river is forecast to rise to 31.8 feet in Kerrville by 8 a.m. and 30.6 feet in Comfort by 2 p.m., including a sharp 17-foot rise between 10 and 11 a.m. Significant damage is expected along the river. Walmart serves as a reunification center, and First United Methodist Church at 321 Thompson Drive is a shelter for displaced residents. Flooded streets include Arcadia Loop, Thompson Drive, Guadalupe Street, Lowry Street, Herzog and Loop 13, Rio Robles, Riverside Drive, and parts of Broadway. A Flood Watch remains in effect for the Hill Country until 1 p.m. Friday, with 1 to 3 inches of rain expected, and isolated spots up to 5 to 7 inches. Rain chances drop to 10% by evening, keeping most fireworks shows on track.Remember: just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you down, and two feet can carry away a car. Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. If you see a flooded road, turn around—don’t drown. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Even just six inches of fast-moving floodwater can knock you off your feet—and two feet can carry away a car. Never try to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters.
