Death of Classical begins its 2021 season in Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery.
Death of Classical has taken classical music out of the concert hall and into some striking and dramatic spaces in the past. The promenade-style classical music experience of “Hymn to the City” is something else again. How do you expect the two-hour perambulation will affect and enhance the overall experience of the music?
Then we visit Leonard Bernstein’s grave, which sits just past two incredibly powerful monuments to the Civil and Revolutionary Wars, and we remember those who have fought for our freedom, and others like Lenny who worked tirelessly in service of peace. Just beyond his grave, a brass quintet will play a suite from West Side Story, one of music’s greatest tales of love striving to overcome hatred and division.
We’ll end in the Catacombs, with a final performance that remembers how, even through terrible trauma, New York has always found a way to heal itself, to rebuild and return stronger than before, and to offer an example of how people can come together and make something greater than the sum of its parts.
