A senate inquiry examining why Victoria walked away from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games is holding hearings in the regional city of Bendigo. Follow live.
Ballarat Deputy Mayor Amy Johnson and councillor Ben Taylor are now calling into the hearing.
"I find it incredibly frustrating that that expectation was there, that we re-allocate our resources and the attention of our council and our finite organisational resources for preparing for the Games," Ms Johnson says. "We were working through even more compressed timelines than would normally be the case and yes, there were always some big challenges in that."
"We were getting a bit of an upgrade to the BMX track and facilitating a time trial road race event, not big pieces of infrastructure that were going to raise any red flags."The committee has been hearing from representatives of theGunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation. Mr Poulton said multiple times that he felt like the people of Ballarat were not getting a say in the planning of the now-cancelled Games.

Mr Poulton also expressed concern about the lack of discussion with people in Ballarat about the best way to approach the Games and what kind of legacy infrastructure they might want.

As for the cancellation of the Games in Victoria, Mr Moneghetti said he understood there was considerable disappointment in Ballarat, where athletics was to be held. None of this has much to do with Victoria's cancellation of the 2026 Commonwealth Games but I'm sure they'll get around to that.
She told ABC Melbourne the premier was "attempting to silence the consultants involved, lawyers involved, and others so I think it was for me really disquieting".
