Inaki Godoy as Luffy in One Piece live action
Netflix's live-action One Piece series will tell you that Monkey D. Luffy ate the Gum Gum Fruit, which turns the user's body into rubber. That's not strictly true. There are three types of Devil Fruits in the One Piece world.
Logia fruits turn the user's body into an element, as seen with Captain Smoker. Paramecia fruits provide a physical ability, like Nico Robin's sprouting limbs. Zoan fruits allow for full transformations, which is the type of power Chopper and Dalton both possess. Luffy's Gomu Gomu Fruit is supposed to be a paramecia type, since its chief property is making a person rubbery. In truth, Luffy ate a zoan-type fruit, specifically the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. One Piece's later chapters reveal that Nika was an ancient god of the sun whose body could bend like rubber, and Luffy's Devil Fruit transforms him into this springy deity. The more Luffy trains his abilities, the more of Nika emerges. Right now in Netflix's live-action One Piece, the secret of Luffy's true identity is closely guarded by the World Government, but season 2 drops three big clues to point viewers in the right direction. Luffy Does The Nika Pose While Singing To Laboon After Luffy realizes he'll have more luck getting through to Laboon by singing to the whale instead of punching it, he dives into a rendition of"Binks' Brew" complete with an impromptu dance. Nika happens to be quite a jovial and musical god, and is known for performing a specific pose that has spread across all the oceans of One Piece's world. The move looks like a person running with the arms and legs at right angles, and Iñaki Godoy's Luffy hits it while performing to Laboon in One Piece season 2. The pose reoccurs throughout the One Piece anime and manga, usually during times of celebration, and many characters recognize it without necessarily knowing where it hails from. Luffy is one such character, being familiar enough with Nika's pose to include it in his dance, but not realizing the significance behind it. The Giants On Little Garden Reference Nika The Sun God The legend of Nika is present within almost every One Piece island's culture, albeit with slightly different meanings. Some view Nika as a savior of the oppressed, while others consider him a destroyer to be feared. Among all the races in One Piece, however, it's the giants who have the closest relationship with Nika, putting the sun god at the very center of their faith. One Piece season 2 reflects this when the sparring giants mention Nika looking down on them. The reference goes entirely over the Straw Hats' heads, and little do the giants know that the living embodiment of Nika is standing right there among them. This is way earlier than One Piece mentioned Nika in the original anime, with over 1000 chapters passing before the sun god's name was first written in print. But because Eiichiro Oda has since established a much deeper bond between Nika and the giants, it makes perfect sense for Dorry and Brogy to worship their rubbery idol in the second season of Netflix's live-action One Piece. Dorry Has A Nika Statue On Little Garden 100 years is a long time to be stuck on the same island, and Dorry has spent his days whittling wooden figurines. One of these is the silhouette of Loki, another giant from Elbaph, but behind the Loki statue is a model that appears to depict Nika. It's difficult to be 100% certain because the glimpse is fleeting and Nika has only appeared in the One Piece manga as a shadow, but the statue possesses Nika's fluffy, cloud-like hairstyle, a hopeful expression on his face, and a general appearance similar to that of Luffy in his Gear 5 form, which is when he truly embodies Nika's spirit. Since we know Dorry and Brogy revere Nika as Elbaph's mighty sun god, it's only natural that Dorry would create a statue to make himself feel more at home on Little Garden during his 100-year stay. It may be a long time before live-action One Piece gets around to covering the Nika reveal - if it ever does - but the Netflix series is certainly having fun dropping breadcrumbs in the meantime. 214 8.6/10 7/10 One Piece 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Action Adventure Fantasy Release Date August 31, 2023 Network Netflix Showrunner Matt Owens, Steven Maeda, Joe Tracz Directors Tim Southam, Marc Jobst, Josef Kubota Wladyka Writers Tiffany Greshler, Diego Gutierrez, Allison Weintraub, Lindsay Gelfand Cast See All
