A new set video from the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch adaptation shows the titular alien's practical stand-in used to help make the final CGI.

A new set video from Disney’s upcoming Lilo & Stitch remake provided a look at the practical stand-in used to represent the film’s titular alien. Based on the 2002 animated film of the same name, Lilo & Stitch marks the latest in a long line of live-action adaptations based on Disney’s animated classics. First announced in 2018, principal photography finally got underway in early-May 2023 under the direction of Academy Award nominee Dean Fleischer Camp.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT A new clip from the ongoing production has been shared online via Reel News Hawaii, giving a glimpse of Stitch’s practical stand-in. Check it out below: Shown being placed onto the back of a waiting jet ski, the stand-in strongly resembles the character’s original animated design with his distinctive ears. The crew member seen handling the stand-in is also followed by another colleague bearing a VFX ball to assist CGI artists in capturing and recreating the original lighting conditions on set for the Lilo & Stitch live-action remake.

Will Disney’s Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Live Up To The Original? When Disney first announced their intentions to make a live-action Lilo & Stitch, responses were mixed. While all predictions seem to point to Disney’s latest remake of The Little Mermaid becoming a box-office success, the studio’s track record with live-action adaptions has not been consistent.

Nonetheless, Lilo & Stitch’s various casting updates have not gone without some measure of controversy. Between accusations of colorism and consternation over the decision to overlook Ving Rhames for the role of Cobra Bubbles, the production has already been met with its share of negative reactions. Whether Disney can find a way to overcome these concerns and deliver a live-action Lilo & Stitch worthy of its animated predecessor remains to be seen.
