David Littleproud said Labor “demonised” the gas companies while in opposition and has failed to engage with them now in government, which is contributing to the higher prices Australians are paying.

Australian Bureau of Statistics Consumer Price Index data released last week showed that gas and other households fuels increased by 14.3 per cent, which was a main driver of inflation for the quarter.

“If you look at last month’s inflationary numbers, a big chunk of that increase was on energy,” he told Sky News Australia. The revamped legislation, which passed earlier this year, imposed limits on the 215 biggest Co2 polluters to reduce emissions as a proportional share of the country’s 2030 43 per cent target.

“They’ve demonised them for nine years in opposition and then refused to talk to them,” Mr Littleproud added. He told Sky News Australia last week that the government has"rocks in its head" if it believed it could have 80 per cent renewables within seven years' time.Mr Littleproud referenced Mr Broad’s comments, and called for common sense to prevail from the Labor government.
